OUR WHY

The Nairobi Renaissance exists to carry forward the legacy of the original Nairobi Movement and Nairobi Schools—community-built spaces rooted in cultural pride, academic excellence, and collective responsibility for Black children.

We believe education should affirm identity, honor history, and prepare young people to lead with purpose. At a time when Black students are too often misnamed or underestimated, we create intergenerational spaces where culture is restored, belonging is strengthened, and futures are actively imagined.

This work is not about fixing our community—it is about remembering our power, reclaiming self-determination, and passing forward what must never be lost.

About Nairobi Renaissance

Overview

The Nairobi Renaissance is a year-long initiative designed to revive the educational spirit and community organizing brilliance of the original Nairobi Schools movement in East Palo Alto. Led by the Nairobi Elders and Education Committee with consulting support from Sherinda Bryant of Culturally Restorative Learning Supports (CRLS), this initiative merges historical best practices with modern tools to support Black youth, families, and learning spaces.

This project centers on reestablishing cultural oases—or “wells”—that affirm Black identity, build academic and emotional capacity, and equip families to advocate for sustainable educational ecosystems.

Anticipated Impact

  • Youth leaders develop stronger cultural identity and advocacy skills.
  • Families gain tools and strategies to support student success.
